The Phi Beta Kappa Society Announces Winner of
2018 Mary Isabel Sibley Fellowship

WASHINGTON, DC – March 30, 2018 – The Phi Beta Kappa Society is pleased to announce that Kaliane Ung, a doctoral candidate at New York University, has been awarded the 2018 Mary Isabel Sibley Fellowship in French Studies. Established in 1934 by Isabelle Stone (ΦΒΚ, Wellesley College) in honor of her mother, this fellowship recognizes exceptional young scholars in the field of French or Greek language, literature and culture. This year the award goes to a French scholar.

Educated in Europe and the United States, Ung plans to use the fellowship stipend of $20,000 for a project called “Wounded Writings: Joë Bousquet, Hervé Guibert, Violette Leduc, Simone Weil.” In the words of her proposal, she intends to explore “how the text works as a survival tool when violence and suffering alter the body.” 

A Sibley selection panel member praised her proposal, stating, “Kaliane Ung's dissertation in progress… takes an original approach to the problem of the wounded individual by examining cases of literal, imaginary, and self-inflicted wounds and . . . the interplay with philosophy and ethics in the cases of Bousquet and Weil, gender studies in the case of Leduc, and science in the case of Guibert. This is a very fine project.”
